The Girl with Empty Eyes

she was sitting on her garden fence,
the first time that i saw her
it was where she always sat,
although i did not recall ever seeing her before

i saw her from my bedroom,
through the fogged up glass
i saw her on a clear day,
though the fog was thick

when she looked towards me,
her eyes went right through
hers were hollow and unseeing
i could see whole worlds inside her

when she spoke,
her voice reached me through the glass:
high, sweet wind chimes,
but with undertones of brass

she said to me:
"never fear the darkness, only dread the light
watch out for the nightbirds: for they speak of untold lies"
she paused to help a passing dream, sent it on its way, then continued with her speech:
"your time will come, as come it must
but swiftly on the wind."
"i feel a great betrayal
and a suffering of souls..."

many years have passed,
i have grown old and weary
but every day i think of her:
the girl with empty eyes...

on that day, i do recall,
i was sitting in my room,
when she came to see me:
a figure in the gloom

now i knew what she foretold
all those years ago
and as she came apon me
i struggled not to look
into those fabled eyes

the worlds inside her eyes her eyes were different
and changing all the time
but suddenly they paused,
and started to expand...

and so here i float,
a watcher in the wind
living out my ephemeral life gazing down apon
an inexhaustible feild of purple grass

so now i know
what she foresaw
on that strange,
memorable day

when i swore my unbreakable oath
to a nymph of illusion
to Her:
the girl with empty eyes...

Across the Burgundy Sea

she sat in her realm of sunlight
she watched the swallows swoop
she wished that she could soar with them
across the burgundy sea...

in all his years of searching
for never had he found
the right one, the right place
so all his life he searched
across the burgundy sea...

so they came together
the searcher and the watcher
she flew, he found
across the burgundy sea...

when you're out a-sailing
and the sun is at its lowest
look up and you will see them
amid the burgundy sea...
